The old saying of “do as I say and not as I do” is one that Jordan and I often find ourselves saying while teaching our 3 and 1 year old new things.
But when it comes to farming, we do the opposite. They are always watching. Watching the good, the bad and the ugly.
Yesterday, our loving sitter, Rhonda (seriously, can’t say enough good things about Rhonda) text me telling me that Rhett was talking to his Dad on his pretend phone. He said to his Dad “You know what to do. Someone else is calling. Bye. Oh, hi, Mom!”
Seriously, he listens and watches and hears all things. Jordan and I both take phone calls when around the kids and do have to switch calls when something urgent comes along. Obviously, he has picked up on this.
Remember, that little corn, that we were SO EXCITED to see rise from the soil on Tuesday… well most of his little buddies sat in the cold, wet ground for too long and will have to be replanted. My excitement was a bit premature – amateur farmer
Am I mad, negative and sad because we have to replant? Sure, I am. Will I go home so Rhett and Reese can watch me stew about something I cannot control? No.
Rhett will remember hopping out of the truck and his mom doing her best “dab” and “running man” because corn was growing in our field. He will remember the smiles and laughter as we scouted for more “green things.” He will remember our love for farming and our love for him (and his sister).
So, to our kids, when it comes to farming, watch, listen, and do as we do. And if we do something wrong, learn from our mistake. If we have a huge win on the farm, learn from our success. Be humble. Be kind. And stop worrying about the weather.
